I found a store with rummies and I've been adding them 3 at a time to not overstock the tank all at once. UGH. My fish from that store had been great so far. The last 3 I added all my rummies broke out with ich a week after I got them. Treated with salt and heat, but all 11 of my rummies were dead in 3 days.
The rest of my fish were fine. After 2 weeks treating I did a big cleaning and water change, then did something STUPID. All of the fish left in the…

I've learned a lot from this site. I've watched videos and looked at photos. I've read posts and voyeured in the chatroom. I am seeing different types of angel fish, different cichlids and all sorts of fish I didn't currently have much interest in, but have now done a little outside reading on.
From reading the site and such, I can name plant species correctly and identify different rainbow fish species by name. However, there is a frustrating thing I must bring up. Many times I see…

I've done plenty of freshwater tanks, dirt tanks, artificial... Basically I've mastered the craft. I have a 30 gallon tank sitting around with nothing in it, and I want to move on to saltwater. From the research I've done so far, it sounds pretty easy after it's set up. Here are the questions I came up with so far.
1. When adding saltwater for the very first time, do I have to do anything special!!!! Can't I just get a big huge bucket of water add the salt as directed, measure…

Ok so i dirted my tank , it's a 12 gallon eclipse with 7 fish (I know its overstocked please don't freak out) there are 3 gouramis that arent agressive at all, 3 goldfish, and one white skirt tetra. When i first dirted the tank i used some dirt from my backyard and some gravel that was all blue and tanky, now today i went to the store and bought some natural looking gravel , and some miracle grow organice choice soil. so tell me where to start please. :)

I attached a sheet of A4 gloss photo paper to the cupboard door beside my tank
so looking down the length of the tank it gives a good indication of water clarity
(photo's taken in same exposure mode and lighting conditions *room…

Soft water has more to do with GH than pH. Typical home water softeners soften water using a technique known as "ion exchange''. That is, they remove calcium and magnesium ions by replacing them with sodium ions. Although this does technically make water softer, most fish won't notice the difference. That is, fish that prefer soft water don't like sodium either, and for them such water softeners don't help at all. Thus, home water softeners are not an appropriate way to soften water for…

So yesterday morning I did my regular water change and tank maintanance on my 40g and 20g.
This morning I wake up and flip on my lights like I would any other day. I come back to check out the 20 and make sure everything is working out well after moving some wood and plants the day before. I notice two things; 1) my serpaes are 'blood' red and 2) both them and the neons are swimming and chasing each other around like crazy. Then to my surprise a spray of neon tetra eggs float right…
