180 Gallon Planted Tank Lighting and Stocking

Alright so I finally got a 180 gallon tank. It is 6x2x2. My question is what kind of lighting do you guys with bigger tanks (125-220ish) have for plants? Im trying to do this as cheep as I can. Im taking down a 75 and a 55 to make room for the 180, so I have 2, 48inch dual t5s that I can put on there but I doubt that will be enough? Im thinking about running 85watt cfls (about four of them) as well since Ive had good luck with them and with two 48 inch strips the…

I got a new 75 gallon tank and I have no idea what to do with it. Can't decide weather to go with a fresh water planted tank or saltwater tank. Or even what to put in it

Build Beginnings

This is to be my walstad tank build blog.

My fiancé and I have recently moved and painted and now its time for the aquarium!

I have been doing some digging and have found the "walstad method" which I think has been known in other names for a long time. Anyway, I am intrigued and excited to dirt the tank!

I will be posting pics and perhaps video of the build process, and I have never dirted a tank before so I am open to comments and suggestions.

I think…

Water Flow and Current in my 55G

I am having some trouble to get my plants to sway. I have a canister 305 going on full blast and it does about half the tank. I attempted to add a powerhead that does 850GPH..Which is an overkill. I am having trouble getting flow to the other half of my 55.

Have any solutions?

I was possibly thinking about buying a powerhead that is rated for a nono tank maybe 425GPH, or even the Hagen mini filter for flow. If you have any suggestions please…

Water change?

I just had my 120 moved by an aquarium service. I had them add dirt before setting it up. I asked him when I could do a water change. He said in over a month! Mainly because the move included about a 75% water change and he wanted to preserve as much bacteria as possible so I won't have to reestablish the tank. My trouble is the dirt! Will tannins go away without a water change? And will I be over run with algae?

Dirted Tank and Goldfish

I have a 30 gallon with dirt substrate and gravel cap. Its not cycled yet but when it is can I add two goldfish to the tank with no plants? I wanted to add plants first but things don't always go as planned. I need to get them out of a 10 gallon as soon as possible. I'm trying to cycle my tank as fast as possible but not seeing any signs it has cycled yet. I have no kit so I'm looking for crap in the filter.

Planted tank help

I just recently added some plants to my fish tank. When I bought them I was told that they were pretty hardy plants and were perfect for the beginner. I just have a normal gravel substrate and I just recently added some flourish tabs for the plants. I was wondering if and what light should I use for the tank? It's a 29 gallon high. Also I'm leaving for the navy again in a month and I was wondering if anyone had any idea if my tank setup would be simple enough to entrust it to my mom while I was… Continue

Help! New Dirted Tank gone Wrong!

So in just planted my old 55 gallon tank, I used the Miracle Grow Organic Choice suggeted by pretty much everyone. I added some crushed coral and fluorite instead of red clay for an Iron additive, I soaked the mix for a day to try and get all the wood chips out, and redried it. In the tank I used an inch of substrate and 1 and 1/2 inch gravel cap. I planted my tank with a various assortment of crypts, some Jungle Val, Anubias Nana, and water wisteria. I ran carbon for 3 days in my Aquaeom 75… Continue
