Keeping Dirt "Alive"?

Im getting ready to finally convert to dirt. But before I do I want to clear something up. I've been hearing that after about a year the strength of the dirt decreases dramatically.
First off is this true? And if it is what are the veteran dirt users out there doing to avoid this issue, redirting their tanks? Some how "feeding" the dirt? I hoping someone can answer this for me so i can fully convert to dirt soon.
Thanks,
Alex.

DIY Foam and Concrete background and Aquascape for 4' Aquarium

Here's my situation. I'm a senior in college (one semester left!) and have a 55g African Cichlid tank and a 10g planted community. The 55g is quite tricky to move back to my apartment at school (6 hours drive) but it's doable. What makes it extra tricky is I aquascape my tank with sandstone tiles. They are heavy and I don't want to keep them in my tank during the trip because I don't want them to break the glass. I normally have to put all of the sandstone pieces into a plastic container…

camallanus worms

So this really sucks. I've got camallanus worms and it's wiping out my fish. It's killed 4 angels in the past 2 weeks. A couple of my fish have the little red worms sticking out of their anus :(. I'm going to be treating with levamisole wich I've read does a really good job at killing these awful worms. Apparently it's not available in Canada so I've ordered it from the U.S and just waiting. Hopefully I don't lose many more fish but I'm worried it's going to wipe out my tank. If anyone has…

What to put for my betta soritoty tank mates?

So everyone gets their shipment of fish in the stores tomorrow. So I want my 5 betta girls to have some tank mates in a planted 20 gal tall tank. I'm so stoked about getting corycats. But I also want to get some other schooling or shoaling fish. But I am undecided on what to get. I have a small budget to work with it. But I also have a 10gal QT tank I can put them in for a few weeks first to see if they develop any diseases.

So my question is what kind of peaceful non-fin…

Algae bloom in dirted tank:(

Hi everyone,

Well as you read I have an algae bloom...green water:(

My tank isn't too new. I converted my tank to dirt a month ago and all is going good. All water parameters are great, fish are great. Plants are reproducing and growing like crazy. I recently updated my lighting, I had only 32 watts on my 55 gallon. Less than 1 watt per gallon. The bulb was a florasun bulb 6500 K.

Now I have 128 watts over the tank and has been for roughly a week. And of course the lighting… Continue

Serpae Tetra Breed

..The Serpae's are now all fat and showing a considerable amount of spawning behavior (in am)...

The plan was initially to just let the group of eight breed in a school. After some research, I decided that a separate breeding tank would be ideal for rearing the newly hatched fry and decrease the amount of egg eating ...... so I packed the 20 long with moss, cabomba, wisteria and a layer of duckweed on the surface..  I then choose the two…

Australian Rainbowfish Aquarium Question

Before I go adding anything in this tank I need to know something. I was under the impression that I need to have a bottom environment to help clean up fallen food not eaten by the rainbowfish. I thought that a few bottom dwellers would help keep the tank cleaner and thought maybe a pair of kribensis would be a good idea. Is this the case?

So I guess my main question is this? Should there be a bottom environment for a rainbowfish tank?

Info: The school is…
